These exhausts are great at giving the vehicle the ability to switch between “quiet” and “loud”

The vehicle's control modules heavily monitor these valves because if a valve fails/jams in the closed position, it would create excessive heat and backpressure, leading to engine damage. If the control modules detect a failure, the ECU is instructed to reduce boost levels and power to keep the engine safe. Oftentimes, a jammed valve does not even trigger a check engine light, so in stock form, it can sometimes be hard to notice when power reduction is happening. On a vehicle with an ECU tune, the difference in power is very noticeable.

Similarly, if you remove the flaps by doing a flap/valve/muffler delete or replace factory valves when installing an aftermarket exhaust system, the control modules determine that the valves are not functioning and will engage the soft power limitation. Unplugged valve motors will typically trigger a check engine light in short order. Leaving the valve motors plugged in electronically still results in the valves failing their operational tests, which then triggers the power reduction, but not necessarily a check engine light.

Flawed Workarounds That Fall Short

Flap Shims & Blocks: The active exhaust system does a self-check when the car is turned on. When the flaps are forced open, a distinct clicking can be heard because the actuators are attempting to open and close the flaps. When it fails, an error is tripped, and the vehicle will enter a limp mode and/or throw engine codes.

Plug-in valve motor simulators- These only prevent the circuit codes from triggering a check engine light. The vehicle still gets the jammed valve codes, which trigger reduced power.

Electronic Override Modules: Aftermarket plugin modules can also malfunction and cause engine codes and a limp mode.

Common Mercedes Active Exhaust Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC)

These are some common DTC codes that you may encounter if the valves are jammed and/or removed **

P13C2 / P13C271 / P13C204: Exhaust flap structural malfunction or blocked actuator.

P13C273: Right-side exhaust flap actuator failing to open properly.

P13C278: Right-side exhaust flap incorrect mechanical adaptation or adaptation limits exceeded.

P140473: Left-side exhaust flap mechanical or electrical malfunction.

P13C21E: Exhaust flap resistance value detected outside the permissible operating voltage range.

How It Works

With the Weistec Exhaust Simulator, the actuator is removed from the exhaust flap and secured to an exhaust flap simulator. Typically, it is because the valves themselves start to bind, which prevents the valve motors from easily actuating.
